Tunnels and Border Insecurity

File this one under: Ya Think?

Agency needs $3M to plug border tunnels

Key entrances have been plugged in some of the biggest tunnels used to smuggle people and drugs across the U.S.-Mexico border but the passageways remain largely intact, raising concerns that smugglers might reuse them, according to a published report.

Critics say the unfilled tunnels pose an unnecessary national security risk. [...]

Seven of the largest tunnels have yet to be filled in, including the so-called Grande Tunnel found in January 2006 that extends nearly a half-mile from San Diego to Tijuana, the Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday. Filling them would cost about $2.7 million, Customs and Border Protection officials told the newspaper.

Arizona May Launch Own Security Force

I love Arizona. I think it is the last state with the courage to do what is necessary to protect the citizens of this country. Great immigration propositions which pass and survive court challenges, and now a proposal to establish it’s own security force.

Security force for state debated

Arizona may become one of the growing number of states to create its own home-grown security force, manned by citizen volunteers and deployed by the governor to deal with emergencies.

It’s a version of a state militia, separate from the Arizona National Guard but available to assist Arizonans in dealing with natural disasters, terrorist attacks or other emergencies.

Supporters say the concept could help Arizona react more effectively to disasters at a time when federal help could be inconsistent at best.

They’re right, and this would be an excellent way to deal with an increasingly incompetant federal bureaucracy.. Bravo Arizonans. If you get this done it, I know you’ll create a version which will serve as a model for the rest of the nation.
Border Patrol Union Says Agent Being Railroaded

Cold-blooded murder. That’s what Mexico claims happened along the Arizona border after an argument between a 22-year-old illegal immigrant and the Border Patrol agent who tried to arrest him. The incident dates back to April of 2000 in Penitas. “He was striking me in the side… he was very close

What Goes Around (Keeps On Going Around)

The Corner on National Review Online

Rudy did an immigration bit that was “to the right of everyone else except maybe Tancredo. He talked about immigration in terms of national security. He said we needed to revamp our entire system so that we can get good people. He also said that if the twelve million already here expected to get any type of citizenship they would have to prove that they could read, write, and speak English.”

Yeah, they said the same thing about the beneficiaries of the Reagan Amnesty.

Never happened.

Free the Guilty Two!

A number of people have written to me over the past few months wanting to know why I haven’t written anything about the two heroic border patrol agents who are currently in jail for killing a suspect. They’re being portrayed by many as the poster boys for the anti-immigration movement. The reason I didn’t take up the mantle of this cause is simply that I always figured there would be more to the story. And there is …
