The State of the Union

What is America—and is it worth defending?

I spoke on campuses recently and listened to a number of students discuss issues of immigration, national identify, and the old race/class/gender conundrum. What struck me were two things: the unwillingness of young Americans in the audience to define, much less in thought or speech to defend their civilization. And I noted the paradoxical criticism of the United States by those who have just arrived on our shores.

“Being There” was the title of a movie starring Peter Sellers that was produced in 1979. It was based on a satirical novel. Bush Says He’ll Consider Pardon for Border Agents

President Bush to review a case for a possible pardon of two former U.S. Border Patrol agents serving time in prison for the non-fatal shooting of a Mexican drug runner. … from foxnewsonline@foxnews.com [Good News! - Ed.]

. . .

Well that’a a wrap on the Border News for tonight. As I was compiling this post, I listened to the President’s State of the Union Address.

What I did not hear was that BP Agents Ramos and Compean would be pardoned.

What I did hear was a call to Congress to present a bill, “I can sign for Comprehensive Immigration Reform.” Prior to these three dreaded words, he did say “without amnesty”, but we all know the nature of compromise in politics.

Postscript to the State of the Union Address: Rookie Jim Webb in his rebuttal is an asshole.
